Herwig-Ulf Meier-Kriesche is Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of Renal and Pancreas Transplantation at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA, and a Central Florida Kidney Center Endowed Chair in Medicine. Professor Meier-Kriesche obtained his MD from the University of Perugia, Italy. After receiving his internal medical training, sub-specializing in nephrology, at the University of Cagliari, Italy, Professor Meier-Kriesche completed research fellowships in transplantation pharmacology and immunology and subsequently nephrology at the University of Texas, Houston, USA, followed by a further transplant nephrology fellowship at the University of Michigan. He is widely recognized for his research in outcomes of kidney transplantation as well as for his studies on the use, metabolism and complications of immunosuppressive drugs in elderly renal transplant recipients. Professor Meier-Kriesche has received numerous prestigious awards and his research interests include study design and outcomes research in renal transplantation, immunosuppressive protocols in transplantation and their effect on chronic allograft failure, and the identification of factors affecting transplant organ and patient survival. Professor Meier-Kriesche regularly reviews scientific papers for a wide variety of nephrology and transplant journals and is an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Transplantation. An internationally renowned speaker, Professor Meier-Kriesche has presented in excess of 110 papers at national and international meetings and has more than 120 peer-reviewed articles and numerous book chapters to his name.
